Stories from intrepid reporters attending the Illinois Press Foundation Journalism Workshop at Eastern Illinois University
Lake Charleston has been a major hotspot when it comes to recreation in Coles County. Boaters and fisherman alike have utilized its 330 acres of surface area.
Loyd and Ann Croy, a couple from Casey, have used the lake to learn how to kayak.
“This is where we started to learn,” Loyd said, “it’s a smaller lake [and] its kinda protected so the winds don’t get too terrible.”
Cyclists and hikers can also enjoy the scenery, with there being multiple trails around the lake.
Brendan Lynch, the Advocacy Director of a local bike shop, is one of the original trailbuilders, and has since had part in adding multiple trails.
“This touches the community in significant and manifold ways,” Lynch said.
With all of the activities it has to offer, Lake Charleston has done its part by bringing the community together for years, and will continue to do so for many generations to come.
